Soundwave Wednesday | January 2, 2019

Welcome to the first Soundwave Wednesday of 2019!

When it comes to ringing in the new year, there are a number of songs that are often associated with the event.

There’s the classic “Auld Lang Syne.” If you’re in Times Square for the big event, you’ll hear Frank Sinatra’s “Theme from New York, New York” along with the more recent tradition of the headlining act performing a cover of John Lennon’s “Imagine.” For people like me who grew up in Disney Channel’s High School Musical era, “Start of Something New” definitely gets some plays in the first few minutes. *NSYNC’s holiday album features a fantastic track titled “Kiss Me At Midnight.”

The list goes on and on.

For me, one of the songs I’ve queued up for the past couple of new years is Weightless by All Time Low.

Granted, this is one of my go-to songs for any day out of 365, but it’s especially poignant in the first couple.

“I make believe that I impress
That every word, by design, turns a head
I wanna feel reckless, wanna live it up just because
I wanna feel weightless ’cause that would be enough
If I could just find the time
Then I would never let another day go by
I’m over getting old
Maybe it’s not my weekend but it’s gonna be my year
And I’m so sick of watching while the minutes pass as I go nowhere
And this is my reaction to everything I fear
‘Cause I’ve been going crazy, I don’t wanna waste another minute here”

I love the message in these lyrics. Wanting to change things about our lives rather than sit around and wait for them to change by themselves is something I feel we can all relate to. It’s the reason we make resolutions to do better and be better than before. We strive to make this new year ours, to take charge and carpe all 365 diems.

I’ll have a post about my own writing-related goals for your reading pleasure this Sunday.

For now, though, you can check out All Time Low’s Weightless via Spotify here!
