Years ago, I shared a list of suggestions for a writing-themed care kit, and it's become one of the most popular posts on the blog.
As something of a follow-up, I'm back with a new list of gift ideas for the writer in your life!
I've taken inspiration from some of the tools I use frequently in my own writing habits as well as things that I feel would be helpful to or genuinely appreciated by writers (including something that is actually on my wish list this year).
Additionally, I'm mostly listing items that tend to be on the inexpensive side because while it would be awesome (if not overwhelming) to be given a new computer that doesn't overheat in a matter of minutes and doesn't sound like a rocket ship blasting off to Saturn, that's definitely not in everyone's budget.
Even though this post is going up around the start of the holiday season, I can assure you that these gifts would be appreciated year-round so make sure to bookmark this page for future reference. That way, you'll be prepared no matter if it's Valentine's Day, graduation, an anniversary, your writer friend's birthday, or some other occasion that calls for a special something.
Noise-Canceling Headphones Or Earbuds
We live in a world of distractions—and that can pose challenges for writers.
If your writer friend lives in a noisy household or has to do a lot of their writing on the go, they might appreciate a set of noise-canceling headphones or earbuds.
Many writers incorporate music into their writing habits, whether it's a playlist tailored to their current WIP or ambient soundscapes meant to dull the din of their surroundings, so gifting them a tool to enable their concentration may be greatly appreciated.
I'm personally a fan of the JLab GO POP+ wireless earbuds, which I reviewed in a recent post.
And if they prefer writing in total silence, you could consider getting them a solid pair of earplugs to help them out.
Book Sleeves
If you're a writer, chances are you're also a bookworm. And many bookworms loathe any damage that comes to their books. Bent or scratched-up covers. Those inexplicable little tears and creases of the pages.
While your bookworm or writer might be the Rory Gilmore of your friend group who takes a book everywhere they go just in case they have a chance to read for a few minutes, the risk of endangering their books might give them pause—thankfully, book sleeves can come to their rescue!
A book sleeve is a protective fabric pouch designed to shield your book from the wear and tear of being carried around in a backpack or bag. They'll often be padded to give your books a little extra protection, making them great for travel whether it's your daily commute to the office or an exotic cruise.
I purchased my book sleeve from ElizabethMayfair on Etsy and use it almost daily not just for books or my tablet (wannabe Kindle girlie here), but also my notebook since I do a lot of my writing on the go. It helps keep everything confined and protected as I'm lugging my stuff around. I've also given book sleeves as gifts in the past and they're always a hit!
The range of fabrics you can find book sleeves made with makes it easy to find the perfect one for the writer on your list.
You could even include a cute bookmark or an annotation set with the book sleeve to make it a set!
Comfy Pajamas
Let's face it: while we may picture writers wearing plaid skirts or tweed jackets with leather patches at the elbows, a lot of us do our writing at home in our sweatpants.
We writers tend to be a cozy lot who just want to curl up with a cup of tea or coffee and sink into our stories, so why not treat the writer in your life to a new set of comfy pajamas for the days we don't plan on leaving the house?
Just because a writer is introverted doesn't mean they can't be stylish!
Dress for the job you want, right?
A Mug Warmer
When we think about common gifts for anyone on our shopping list, mugs often come to mind—even more so since writers are often pictured with a cup of coffee or tea on their desk.
But, of course, writers are known to get absorbed in their work and forget about their beverage of choice, allowing it to cool off.
Even though I am a proud iced-coffee-year-round-New-Englander, I can attest to the disappointment of lukewarm coffee; cooled-off hot chocolate is even worse for me. And I've forgotten about more mugfuls of tea than I'd like to admit.
A writer's hot beverage going cold isn't just a matter of taste, however. It can disrupt their flow and bring their productivity to a screeching halt!
Mug warmers can be a helpful little gadget in this regard, keeping your drink at the perfect temperature for a longer time.
Whether your writer prefers coffee, tea, or hot chocolate, a mug warmer will spare them from trips to the microwave or kettle to reheat their drink, making it an especially practical and thoughtful gift.
An Aromatherapy Kit
Writers are often finding ways to make their workspace personalized and more cozy.
This might include a little aromatherapy.
Some writers might use scented candles, incense, or essential oil diffusers to create a soothing environment, reduce stress, or help them concentrate.
Aromatherapy kits make versatile gifts in general but for writers, they can help create an atmosphere where their creativity can thrive. You may even be able to find candles inspired by their favorite books or their own writing projects to really set the mood!
For specific scents that can be beneficial to writers, check out this post where I go a little more in-depth about aromatherapy for writers!
The Casa Pop-Up Desk By Logitech
As a super-quick disclaimer, this is not a product I own currently or have experience with. However, it's something I've seen popping up in my feeds lately and it's on my own wishlist.
The Casa Pop-Up Desk is perfect not only for writing at home, but writing on the go. It comes with a trackpad and wireless keyboard and transforms into an ergonomic laptop stand that, according to the product's page, encourages better posture. Additionally, the keyboard and trackpad can be stored within the device itself when not in use, and there is a third compartment for pens, sticky notes, or whatever else you might need for a productive writing session.
So whether your writer friend is known for bouncing between coffee shops and the library or from their kitchen table to their bed and back, the Casa Pop-Up Desk not only offers sleek storage for their things but makes it easier to take it all with them.
At the time of writing, it retails at $179.99 and comes in three colors.
